Barnett Clutch Cable for 2009–2016 Triumph Thunderbird and Thunderbird Storm
The Barnett 101-75-10031 is a direct, stock-length replacement clutch cable for the 2009–2016 Triumph Thunderbird 1600, Thunderbird 1700 and Thunderbird Storm. It replaces Triumph part number T2041370. Barnett makes it in the USA with its traditional black vinyl housing. It’s a good replacement for a stretched, frayed, notchy or sticking factory cable, giving a smooth, consistent pull at the lever. The cable does not fit the Thunderbird Commander or Thunderbird LT, which use a different clutch cable.
Features
- Made in the USA by Barnett, a long-established American maker of motorcycle clutches and cables
- Traditional black vinyl housing with a nylon-lined casing for low friction and a smooth lever feel
- OEM-style routing and fittings, including an elbow at the end of the cable
- Stock dimensions: 39.5″ and 17.5″ sheath (outer housing) sections, with 5.25″ of free play
- Direct replacement for Triumph T2041370. It fits stock handlebars with no modification.
Fitment
- 2009–2016 Triumph Thunderbird 1600
- 2011–2016 Triumph Thunderbird 1700
- 2011–2016 Triumph Thunderbird Storm
Does not fit: Thunderbird Commander or Thunderbird LT. These models use a different clutch cable. This cable is stock length. If you’ve fitted taller or wider handlebars or risers, measure your cable before ordering. Barnett can also make custom-length cables.
Signs your Thunderbird clutch cable needs replacing
- A heavy, notchy or sticky clutch lever, or a lever that’s slow to return
- Free play keeps increasing, or the adjuster has run out of travel
- Frayed strands at the lever or clutch-arm end, or a kinked or cracked outer housing
- The clutch drags or neutral is hard to find even with the free play set correctly
A cable that snaps on the road leaves you with no clutch, so replace a fraying cable at the first sign of broken strands.
Installation tips
- Route it like the original. Before you remove the old cable, note exactly how it runs through the frame, guides and clips. Fit the new cable along the same factory route, with no sharp bends or pinch points.
- Check at full lock. With the handlebars at full lock left and right, make sure the free play doesn’t disappear. You need at least 1/8″ (about 3 mm) of free play at the lever in every steering position.
- Lubricate the ends. Put a light cable lubricant on the exposed inner cable and the ball ends. Grease the lever pivot.
- Set free play. Adjust the free play at the lever adjuster to the figure in your Triumph service manual. Then ride to check full disengagement and a clean shift into neutral.
- Check the clutch actuating lever setup. Triumph released a revised clutch cable for the non-Commander Thunderbird from VIN 693388 and repositioned the clutch actuation lever to eliminate clutch drag. If your bike drags or you can’t set the free play, check the actuation lever position against the procedure in Triumph Technical News 161 and your service manual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Triumph Thunderbird models does the Barnett 101-75-10031 clutch cable fit?
It fits the 2009–2016 Triumph Thunderbird 1600, the 2011–2016 Thunderbird 1700 and the 2011–2016 Thunderbird Storm. It does not fit the Thunderbird Commander or Thunderbird LT.
Does this cable fit the Thunderbird Commander or Thunderbird LT?
No. The Commander and LT use a different clutch cable. This Barnett cable is only for the standard Thunderbird 1600/1700 and the Thunderbird Storm.
What Triumph part number does this clutch cable replace?
It replaces Triumph clutch cable T2041370 and is Barnett part number 101-75-10031.
What are the dimensions of the Barnett Thunderbird clutch cable?
The cable has 39.5″ and 17.5″ sheath (outer housing) sections and 5.25″ of free play, matching the stock Thunderbird cable for use with standard handlebars.
Will it work with aftermarket handlebars or risers?
It’s made for stock handlebars. If you’ve fitted taller or wider bars or risers, measure the cable you need before ordering. Barnett can make custom-length cables to your measurements.
How much free play should a Thunderbird clutch cable have?
Set it to the figure in your Triumph service manual. Make sure there’s at least 1/8″ (about 3 mm) of free play at the lever with the handlebars at full lock left and right. Too little free play can make the clutch slip.
How do I know my clutch cable needs replacing?
Replace it if the lever is heavy, notchy or slow to return, if free play keeps increasing, if the adjuster has run out of travel, or if you can see frayed strands at either end. A fraying cable can snap without warning.
My Thunderbird’s clutch drags. Will a new cable fix it?
It may help if the old cable is stretched or binding. Triumph also released a revised Thunderbird clutch cable from VIN 693388 and repositioned the clutch actuation lever to eliminate clutch drag, as described in Triumph Technical News 161. Check the lever position and free play against your service manual when you fit the new cable.
Should I lubricate a new Barnett cable?
The nylon-lined housing needs no oil inside. Put a light cable lubricant on the exposed inner cable and the ball ends, and grease the clutch lever pivot when you fit it.
Where are Barnett cables made?
Barnett makes its clutch and throttle cables in the United States.
